A special message from MCEC President, José Mosquera
Dear readers,
As we have reached my term of four years as President of MCEC, it is a good time to sum up the actions that took us where we are now and what we have achieved in this period.
Our strategic pivot in 2019 was to include political advocacy alongside our foundational communication efforts marked by a new chapter for MCEC, one that faced immediate challenges with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Our work has fostered meaningful engagements with policymakers and industry partners, where we have highlighted the indispensable role of microbial control in society, and the challenges faced by our industry
We have been active in an extensive stakeholder dialogue. We initiated our political journey by engaging with Members of Parliament, and despite the barriers to have face to face meetings, we were very well received by MEP’s and members of their staff. They quickly recognized the value of the contribution of Microbial Control to Society, especially in the pandemic period, where disinfectants and sanitizers were key to control the spread of microorganisms.
In parallel, we engaged with other Industry Associations, like CEPE, EPDLA and especially Biocides for Europe both representing key users of Microbial Control technologies and who recognize its strategic importance.
In view of the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, and the debate about Essential Uses, we published a paper in Euractiv, which had a large number of readers. In 2021, we held a workshop with representatives from Academia (namely Dr. Joel Tickner, who is a reputed professor and consultant for the European Commission) as well as with the Paint and Coatings Industry Association.
We have contributed to several Public Consultations (Sustainable Products Initiative, REACH and CLP revision, extension of the Review Programme). We raised the issues caused by foreseen end of Data protection the latter in close cooperation with our sister Association, Biocides for Europe.
We are also engaged with the European Commission, where we are showing our commitment to sustainability and innovation as well as our commitment to the Chemical Industry Transition Pathway.
